1st Round Midwest Region: Virginia routs Hampton to advance

Virginia

Hampton is a 16 seed trying to make history by defeating a number seed. Like Austin Peay, that did not happen. Virginia easily handled Hampton.

The ESPN recap article about the game stated, “Virginia sure got a scare in its NCAA Tournament opener…Not from Hampton — but from coach Tony Bennett.” That was absolutely true. You see, in the closing minutes of the first half, Virginia’s head coach Tony Bennett collapsed courtside. He was rushed into the locker room where it was found that Bennett had collapsed due to dehydration and feeling sick earlier in the week. Bennett jokingly stated on his collapse, “I’ve had more powerade now than I’ve ever had in my life.”

Virginia led virtually the whole game, leading 40-21 at the end of the first half. Hampton was the victim of a 20-3 Virginia run in the first half, which put Hampton away early. They would never recover.

Hampton, against ACC schools, is 1-15. They have not beaten an ACC school since they beat North Carolina in the 2000-2001 season. Virginia, on the other hand, will advance and play Butler in the 2nd round on Saturday from Raleigh, NC.
