1st Round East Region: Providence wins in thrilling fashion

Providence

Providence wins games for two reasons–Khris Dunn and Ben Bentil.  Dunn played only 27 minutes due to foul trouble and Bentil was held under his scoring average, but the Friars still found a way to survive and advance with a win.  With this being said, Bentil scored a game high 19 points; he averages over 21, and Dunn stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points to add to 4 rebounds and 4 assists.  The Trojans of Southern California did everything but win the game.  They shot 53 percent from the floor and a whopping 46 percent from behind the three-point line.  USC’s Achilles heel turned out to be the free-throw line.  The Trojans managed to shoot just 53 percent from the charity stripe and missed some key ones down the stretch that kept Providence in the game.  USC missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with just under 12 seconds left.  Dunn pushed the ball down the court for Providence and missed a mid-range jump shot.  The ball was knocked out of bounds and was last touched by USC.  With just over three seconds remaining, Drew Edwards found Rodney Bullock slipping to the basket uncovered.  Bullock finished the layup and gave Providence a victory.  USC’s Jordan McLaughlin scored a team high 15 points while Nikola Jovanovic added 14 more for the Trojans.

Providence moves on the play number-one seed North Carolina.  Providence will be a bit undermatched inside, but with two stars in Bentil and Dunn, anything is possible.
