Defense wins championships

Cam Newton, the NFLs Most Valuable Player, and Peyton Manning, possibly the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, squared off in Super Bowl 50.  The team’s defenses, however, wouldn’t let the quarterbacks steal the show.  The Broncos, led by pass-rusher Von Miller, were able to stymie Cam Newton and the rest of the Panthers offense in route to a decisive 24-10 victory.  Miller, who recorded six total tackles along with two and a half sacks, was named the game’s MVP.  Miller was a force the whole night.  He was virtually un-blockable and proceeded to disrupt plays in the backfield all game.  Carolina’s offense did outgain Denver’s 315-194, but the Panthers could never finish drives and turnovers continued to stall opportunities.

The Broncos struck first with a Brandon McManus field goal, and then Malik Jackson recovered a fumble in the end zone on a play where Von Miller sacked and stripped Cam Newton near the goal line.  Carolina answered with a drive capped off by a one-yard, Jonathon Stewart touchdown run.  With the score 10-7 Denver, McManus recorded his second field goal of the day to send the Broncos into half time.  McManus added his third and final field goal in the third quarter to give Denver a 16-7 lead heading to the fourth quarter.  Carolina booted a field goal of their own to pull within six points early in the fourth, but Manning and the Denver offense responded.  The scoring drive was capped off with a one-yard touchdown dive by CJ Anderson, and the two-point conversion pass from Manning to Bennie Fowler was successful giving Denver a 24-10 lead, the game’s final score.

Manning, who was a mere 13-23 for 141 yards and an interception, was able to equal his younger brother Eli in Super Bowl rings with his second.  Cam Newton did not have an MVP game. He was held to just 18-41 passing and turned the ball over three times.  If this was the last game of Manning’s storybook career, it ended on a very high note.
