Go Gurley Go!

Todd Gurley has carried himself onto center stage of the NFL, and the rookie from Georgia has started just two games.  In the two games he has started, he has shown why the Rams selected him with the tenth pick of the draft.  He ran all over two of the best teams in the league.  The scary thing is, he is still getting better.

Gurley was activated week three against the Steelers.  He was inactive during the preseason and the first two weeks of the regular season as he was still rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in college last year.  He saw limited action against Pittsburgh as it was obvious Jeff Fisher and the Rams were easing him back into action.  The next week though, this would not be the case.

Gurley made his first start on the road against division rival and current undefeated Arizona Cardinals.  Gurley seemed to be bottled up in the first half.  The Cardinals’ front seven was getting all kinds of penetration and Gurley had nowhere to run.  Things changed for Gurley and the Rams in the second half.  The offensive line for the Rams got going and so did Gurley.  Gurley carried the ball 19 times for 146 yards with 141 yards coming in the second half.  When the Rams needed a big play, they handed it to the rookie.  He carried the Rams to a 24-22 upset.  The most impressive thing Gurley did was in the fourth quarter when he went down in bounds to keep the clock rolling.  This is a very heady play for such a young player.  His knowledge and understanding of the game is far advanced for a player in his rookie year.

The following week in Green Bay turned out to be the Todd Gurley show.  Fisher called his number early and often as Gurley carried 30 times for 159 yards.  The number of times he was able to carry the ball was huge for the Rams.  Although St. Louis lost the game, Gurley proved he was the workhorse back of the future for the Rams.  Through two starts, the knee has held up fine and looks to be no problem going forward.

Gurley’s stats are out of this world compared to others in the league.  He is tied with Le’Veon Bell with five rushes for twenty yards or more.  He is tied for first with Chris Ivory as the two are averaging 104.7 rushing yards per game.  He is the top-ranked running back in yards per carry with at least 50 carries with 5.7 yards per carry.  He also has the fourth longest carry of the year at 55 yards.  His production has far exceeded any expectations.  Look for Gurley to continue to carry a heavy workload and the Rams the rest of the season and for years to come.
