Phamtastic

The St Louis Cardinals’ outfield has been ravaged by injuries these past few months with Matt Holliday, Randal Grichuk, and Jon Jay all spending time on the disabled list.  Manager Mike Matheny was desperate to have someone step up and carry the offense in the absence of these big bats, and Tommy Pham has done just that.  The twenty-seven-year-old outfielder is having the month of his life.  He was called up early in the season but was rarely used due to the fact that the Cardinals were healthy.  In July and August he started playing more and was often used as a pinch hitter and a utility starter in the outfield.  Towards the end of August, as his playing time increased, he started to hit very well.  He hit a combined .302 in August, but that seems modest now that he’s on fire in September.  For the Cardinals, September has been a crazy month.  With injuries mounting and the surging Pirates and Cubs making a run at the NL Central crown, the Cardinals needed a boost, and a boost is what they got.  Tommy Pham took the league by storm this month hitting .328 with four home-runs and thirteen RBIs.  He added seven more extra-base hits and had an on-base percentage of .350.     His production at the plate has helped the Cardinals to a winning record in the month and helped keep division rivals Pittsburg and Chicago at bay.  As the Cardinals enter the playoffs, they look for continued production out of Pham.  Now that the Cardinals are starting to get healthy, anything out of the rookie is an added bonus as the Birds on the Bat make their World Series push.
