As the third period ended on May 16, the Los Angeles Kings celebrated a dramatic 6-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. The loss for the Ducks at home marked not only the end of their chance at the Stanley Cup, but almost equally as disappointing, the end of the career of one of the best players in the league—Teemu Selanne. Selanne retired Friday night at the age of 43 after an impressive 21-year career in the National Hockey League, leaving a legacy that will last for generations to come.
Born in Helsinki, Finland, Selanne first played professionally in the Jokerit Helsinki-Finland league. After being drafted as a young 22-year-old tenth overall by the Winnipeg Jets, his career flourished. He left the Jets in 1995 to join the now-called Anaheim Ducks. Aside from four seasons in which he competed for the San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim was where he remained until he retired.
At the end of a historic career, Selanne had played over 1,451 games in the National Hockey League in addition to 95 games played for Finland on the international stage. During his 21 years, Selanne netted 684 goals and assisted 773 goals for a combined point total of 1,457 points, averaging roughly one point per game. In World Championships, as well as the Olympics, Selanne received 102 points throughout the 16 years he competed in those events. His success on the ice during international competitions even earned him Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Sochi Olympics—he currently holds the record of having the most points earned in Olympic competition.
During his fruitful career, Selanne earned the distinction of 18 franchise records and three National Hockey League records. These records are a substantial impact in the world of ice hockey. However, to many, one of the biggest impacts Teemu Selanne has left is the attitude displayed on and off the ice. The respectful and determined demeanor of the Finnish player will long be remembered and looked upon (even from those from opposing teams). This personality will undoubtedly continue in Selanne’s future career aspirations as he plans assist with the defense in the Ducks franchise. It is certain that Selanne will continue to impact hockey for years to come.
