On February 7, the film adaptation of the beloved book Vampire Academy will open in theaters.
The story follows Rose Hathaway, played by Zoey Deutch, who is half-vampire and half-human, a dhampir. Rose is training to be a guardian at St. Vladimir’s Academy along with many others like her. In her world, along with the dhampir, there are good and bad vampires. The Moroi co-exist peacefully with humans and only take blood from donors. They also possess the ability to control one of four elements: water, earth, fire or air. The Strigoi, on the other hand, are evil vampires who drink and kill because they enjoy it.
Rose and other dhampir guardians are trained to protect the good vampires and kill the bad. Rose with her best friend, Princess Vasilisa Dragomir, a Moroi, must run away from St Vladimir’s in order to protect the princess, played by actress Lucy Fry, from those who wish to harm her and use her for their own means. As romance and danger collide, the stakes rise and Rose must fight harder to survive.
The movie is directed by Mark Waters who also directed Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, and Ghost of Girlfriend’s Past among others. The film stars Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures), Lucy Fry, Danila Lozlovsky, and Sarah Hyland (Modern Family).
The story was origionally written by Richelle Mead who is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of fantasy books for both adults and teens. The Vampire Academy series consists of 6 books which are all internationally bestselling books.
For fans of the series, the first movie is a very exciting addition to the franchise. Avid readers and movie-goers alike are expecting a lot from this movie. With an experienced director, hopeful actors, and an award-winning writer, I’m hoping the movie does very well when it hits theater next month.
