ASL Sign Battle

Erin Lind, staff writer

I am in American Sign Language (ASL) class at Jacksonville High School. Throughout the year I have learned a variety of signs. Even though I am a CODA (Child of a deaf adult), I learn something new every day. A couple weeks ago our teacher, Mrs. Moore came to us with an idea of having a sign battle where it is pretty much the same as JHS Idol except we don’t sing, we sign the song. So I partnered with Tori Covell, and we signed the song “I got a feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas. The sign battle was held on May 10th in the school auditorium. We were up against a lot of other kids ranging from ASL 2 class and ASL 3 class (sophomore, juniors and seniors). It was a really good competition with a lot of good competitors. The following Friday we found out that Tori and I had won! It was a great feeling to know that all our hard work of practicing had paid off, and we put on a really good show! Overall, it was a really good experience and it really helped to boost my self-confidence to express myself. Signing has always been a great way to express myself and has been a really big part of my life growing up in a deaf household and having several other family members who are deaf too. I am glad that I could have this opportunity to sign with one of my best friends who is also deaf and put on a performance for the classes and show them what we can do! It was a great way to show the other kids a good example of facial expressions and how to use your body language to help with the performance and to help with their signing ability.
