J’ettes compete at Highland

With only one competition left until state and only one out of their three competition routines qualified, the Jacksonville J’ettes had some serious stress to overcome at their last competition of the season.

At previous competitions, the J’ettes competed with their kick and hip hop routines.  Due to penalties and faults in certain hip hop stunts, the girls were only able to qualify for state in kick.  For their last competition at Highland High School, the J’ettes brought two extra dances to the floor hoping to qualify them as well as hip hop.  First up to compete was their new “Magic” themed pom routine.  The J’ettes had had difficulties cleaning this routine and were unable to take it to their previous competitions.  After a few weeks of cleaning and perfecting the routine, the J’ettes were finally able to compete with it at Highland.  Out of the six teams in the AA pom category, the J’ettes placed third and were luckily able to qualify for state in this routine.

After pom qualified, the J’ettes now had two routines going to state.  Up next was hip hop.  This routine ran into many difficulties prior to this competition and the J’ettes were anxious to see if all their hard work at practice would pay off for this routine.  By eliminating illegal stunts and adding difficulty to the dance, the girls were able to place fourth out of nine teams in the AA hip hop category, qualifying for state in this routine as well.

The J’ettes were overjoyed to be going to state in all three of their competition dances, but there was still one more routine left.  Tori Covell, a senior at JHS competed with a solo dance that she choreographed herself.  At the end of the day, she added to the J’ettes success and qualified her solo for state as well.

State for the J’ettes will be held on Saturday, February 13 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.  Covell will compete with her solo at 7:40 am.  Following it will be kick at 11:38, hip hop at 4:27, and pom at 8:00.
