One of JHS’s very own seniors, Josh Peak, received the Herman Dieckamp Scholarship to the University of Illinois. This is a full-ride scholarship, including tuition and fees, for his next four years attending the university.
Peak’s first reaction when he found out was “pretty excited.” Peak said, “ I’ve always wanted to attend the U of I, and this just made it easier for me to go there.”
To apply for the scholarship, Peak had to apply through the university. He also had to write an essay, explain what he plans to study and why he needs the scholarship. He also had to list all the community service he has participated in thus far.
The board of the university decides who receives the scholarship. Peak explained how only one applicant is awarded the Herman Dieckamp Scholarship per year.
Peak explains how ever since his Uncle Andy attended the U of I and played basketball for them he’s always been interested in the school. The U of I is also ranked in the top five in the nation for engineering, which is exactly what Peak plans to study: civil engineering.
Peak said, “I took some drafting classes here, and it really sparked my interest.” Peak also has some relatives who work in the engineering field, and he’s always heard how great of a job it is.
Although Peak is one of our best players on our basketball team here at JHS, he does not plan on playing in college. Peak said, “If anything I would probably play intermural basketball.” Wanting to focus on his grades, he figures it would be best to just play for fun from now on.
Peak is excited to attend the U of I this fall. We wish him the best of luck! Congratulations!
