The Geography Bowl will enter its 20th year on November 14. To celebrate the anniversary, it will feature several new question types.
The Geo-Bowl is an annual contest held by the JHS Geography Club in which teams of fifth and sixth graders from local elementary schools answer questions about geography. Geo-Club members spend several weeks writing questions that are then organized into rounds.
Questions can relate to almost any topic pertaining to geography, requiring students to identify correct answers from such diverse categories as US states, current events, rivers, flags, languages, and more.
The elementary school teams are arranged in a set of tournament brackets, with each team randomly paired against another. The teams compete to answer the questions in each match. Whichever team has answered the most questions correctly will advance to the next round.
In order to celebrate its twentieth year, the Geo-Bowl will include some new types of questions, including language identification questions and “disoriented states” in which US states will spin onto the screen to provide an extra challenge.
“The questions this year have been top-notch,” says Geo-Club sponsor Jim Chelsvig.
The 20th Geo-Bowl will take place at the JHS auditorium on Wednesday, November 14.
