This year Mrs. Hartsook’s clothing class is sending dresses to orphanages in Africa.
This is the second year that Hartsook’s class is sending dresses. She came across the idea on the internet. The non-profit organization is called Dresses for Africa.
Hartsook liked this idea because it is an altruistic project for her class to do. Her class will send 46 dresses total and plans to send them as soon as possible. Each dress costs two dollars to send; however, the organization also gets monetary gifts and donations so they will be using that money to send the dresses, that way Hartsook’s class will not have to pay or raise money to send them.
All 46 dresses are made up of pillow cases and have yoyo flowers on them as decoration to “bling it up.” Some of the students brought in old pillow cases, while others bought new. Mrs. Hartsook herself bought pillow cases from Goodwill to use. The dresses will range from sizes three to eleven, giving the girls in the orphanages a variety to choose from.
Hartsook has two clothing classes that have made dresses to send, which adds up to about thirty students total. Each student made one as well as Hartsook herself.
Hartsook said, “I just think it’s important for students to give to the less fortunate.”
This will be the last year Hartsook will be doing this project with her clothing classes. She plans to find a new project to help the needy.
Hartsook also does many other altruistic projects with her other classes. Her Adult Living class is holding a food drive next week. They have also altered bedspreads for New Directions, the local homeless shelter.
“I personally came to the realization to help other people. So I’m doing it through the students,” said Hartsook.
Hartsook has been a teacher here at JHS for two years now. She is definitely making a difference in her classes, in the school, and in the community as well. Thank you, Mrs. Hartsook, for everything you’re doing!
