SEC basketball preview

Avery Dugan, Staff Writer

The SEC is not known for their great basketball teams, but they are known for having good athletes which makes it tough for teams to play them. More of the same can be expected this year with Kentucky leading the way in the SEC.

Last year’s standings were a surprise for anyone that follows college basketball as Kentucky lost five games in conference play.

SEC Standings 2015

  1. Texas A&M
  2. Kentucky
  3. South Carolina
  4. LSU
  5. Vanderbilt
  6. Ole Miss
  7. Georgia
  8. Florida
  9. Arkansas
  10. Alabama
  11. Mississippi State
  12. Tennessee
  13. Auburn
  14. Missouri

This year will be a little different; the top teams in the conference are Kentucky, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Florida.

Kentucky has one of the best recruiting classes coming in with a great coach, and more of the same can be expected from them. They have shown how good they are by putting up more than 150 points in their expedition game. They are flashy and a very good ball team who will probably compete for a national championship this year.

Texas A&M should be competing with Kentucky for the SEC title and a national championship. They have a very good coach and some top notch athletes that can compete with anyone in the country.

Vanderbilt has a good coach and some good shooters that will help them win games, but their home floor advantage will win them many games this year.

South Carolina expects to compete with Vanderbilt and Florida for a third place finish in the SEC; they are fundamentally sound and play good defense.

Florida, under second-year coach Mike White, has several playmakers that started playing more as a team as the season went on last year. Great things are expected  out of them this year and in years to come.

The SEC should have a lot of success in basketball this year as the teams improve. This should be the year the SEC shows the country they can compete in basketball.
