On March 16, 2015, the NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament technically started. Taking place in Indianapolis, 64 teams were automatically selected to take part in it. Eight teams competing for four spots were also included. The “First Four” as they are called played each other over the course of two days in the UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. In order to play top-seeded Kentucky, Hampton University defeated Manhattan University. In order to play the third-seeded University of Oklahoma, Dayton University beat Boise State. Robert Morris University played and defeated University of North Florida to play another top seed in Duke. The final play-in game featured Ole Miss defeating Brigham Young University in which Ole Miss moved on to play the sixth-seeded Xavier.
The second round was broken up into four regions: the Midwest, South, East, and West. The top seeds for each region were Kentucky in the Midwest, Villanova in the East, Wisconsin in the West, and Duke in the South. All four of the number one seeds advanced to the second round. The only notable major upsets were when the fourteenth seeded UAB Blazers defeated the third-seeded Iowa State Cyclones and the 14th-seeded Georgia State overtook the third-seeded Baylor Bears. Apart from the SMU-UCLA upset where the UCLA Bruins defeated the SMU Mustangs, most other teams who were supposed to win did.
As of right now, the overall top-seeded Kentucky is the clear-cut favorite to win the tournament. Currently they are an undefeated 37-0. Last night, in the Sweet-16, Kentucky defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 78-39. In the next game of the Elite Eight, they face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, their next obstacle on their road to perfection.
