No Kevin Durant? – No Problem. Over the past month, the Oklahoma City point guard has taken the NBA by storm. Russell Westbrook’s hot streak started in the All-Star Game when he scored a game high 41 points. He then carried his success into the second half of the season. Since the All-Star break, Westbrook is averaging 33.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 11.7 assists. During this time, the Thunder have needed him the most. Last year’s MVP Kevin Durant went down with yet another foot injury, and Russell has been left to carry the team by himself, which he has done masterfully. Westbrook become the first player since Michael Jordan to record four straight triple doubles. The last triple double came in a 49 point, 16 rebound, 10 assist outing in which Russ had to wear a protective mask because of a broken bone in his face. Westbrook’s recent performances have catapulted him into the MVP discussion along with James Harden and Steph Curry. If Durant’s injury lingers, look for Russ to continue to carry the Thunder and put up huge numbers as they make their final playoff push.
