It is about that time again, the MLB is opening up their season. The pitchers and catchers reported to Spring Training on February 18 through the 23 (depending on the team), and the other fielders reported between the 22 and the 27. The first exhibition game is on March 1; the Philadelphia Phillies will take on the Spartans from the University of Tampa. Over the next couple of days, MLB teams will play collegiate teams. The first set of MLB vs MLB teams will be on March 3.
One of the more interesting storylines out of the MLB overall is the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs, for the past few years, have been at the bottom of the barrel in both the NL Central and the MLB altogether. However, this year the Cubs appear to be loaded, combining the acquisition of former AL manager of the Year, Joe Maddon, after the controversial firing of former manager Rick Renteria and the former three-time all-star pitcher, Jon Lester. The Cubs on paper seem like a World Series favorite.
Another sub-story is the multitude of prospects that the Cubs will bring to spring training as non-roster invitees. Prospects include the highly touted third baseman Kris Bryant or shortstop Addison Russell. The Cubs will open up Cactus League play with split-squad games with the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. MLB will open its season on Easter night when the Cubs take on their rivals, the St Louis Cardinals, at the probably unfinished Wrigley Field.
