A day after being a utility player for ten different MLB teams, actor Will Ferrell (yes, that Will Ferrell!) has been offered a “minor league contract” to be a player/coach for the Chicago Cubs Double-A affiliate, the TN Smokies.
One day ago, actor Will Ferrell took part in filming an HBO documentary with the proceeds going to the “Stand Up for Cancer” charity. Ferrell played approximately one inning at every position, even pitcher and catcher, for ten teams. He traveled to each game in a helicopter. He started the day in Scottsdale, AZ, with the Oakland Athletics and the Seattle Mariners. Over the course of the game, he played shortstop with the Athletics and second base for the Mariners. He then flew to Mesa and Sloan Park to take part in the Cubs vs Angels game. He played first base for the Cubs and was taken out for Cubs actual backup first baseman Mike Olt after only one batter. After the Angels were set down, Ferrell became the impromptu 3rd base coach for the Cubs, holding up signs saying “SWING AS HARD AS YOU CAN” or “TAKE THIS PITCH NOW!” Some 3-4 hours later, he made his final stop at Peoria Stadium where he pitched for the LA Dodgers against the San Diego Padres; he retired the lone batter he faced, Rico Noel, when he fielded a grounder right back to him.
A day after, a contract was offered to him by the Tennessee Smokies. The Smokies announcement said that the terms of the contract would not be disclosed; however, it is expected to include meatloaf and also the four food groups (candy, candy cane, candy corn and syrup, paying homage to the movie Elf.) The Smokies announced the deal via Twitter with the line: “The team hopes the deal for Ferrell would vault them to a Southern League title because if you ain’t 1st, you’re last.”
