Prior to the 2014 Chicago Cubs season, the Chicago Cubs introduced the renovations that would be made through the 2018 season. The renovations would cost about $575 million and work would take place in four phases over those consecutive offseasons.
Phase I will take place during the 2014-2015 offseason. In this phase, the right and left field bleachers will be gutted, cleaned, and restructured to incorporate bullpens underneath the bleachers possibly out of sight from spectators. Also, they will introduce a 5,000 square foot JumboTron® in left center field, a giant Budweiser beer sign in right field and the possibility of five more advertising signs in the outfield. The bleachers will be restructured underneath the seating areas for bullpens and walkways, and a new left-field party patio and adjoining smaller video board, similar to the one below the right-field party patio, will be added by Easter night when the Cubs play the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Night.
When the Cubs announced the renovations, they drew the ire of the rooftop owners who rent out their rooftops to groups to watch the games. With the scoreboard and the advertising in the outfield, the view from the rooftops could be obstructed. The legal negotiations are still ongoing.
