All of the talk about the cold weather leading up to the Super Bowl ended when the game time temperature was 49 degrees. The months of talk of the cold weather and possible snowfall ended. A beautiful winter night was the setting for what seemed to be a great match-up of teams. This game had the makings for a great one, until the first play from scrimmage…
The first play from scrimmage was the beginning and the end of the Broncos chances of winning the Super Bowl. The shotgun snap to Peyton Manning sailed over his head and into the end zone where the Seahawks recovered for a safety. Seattle hit two field goals and Cam Chancellor picked off a Manning pass to ensure an 8-0 lead after the first quarter for Seattle.
Seattle scored twice in the second quarter to increase their lead. Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch rumbled into the end zone from one yard out to give the Seahawks a 15-0 lead. It looked like Denver was regrouping at the end of the first half, but when Malcolm Smith picked off another Manning pass and ran it back for a touchdown the lead increased to 22-0 in favor of Seattle.
The Seahawks were set to receive the kickoff at the start of the third quarter when Denver’s kicker tried a pooch kick to not let dangerous return man Percy Harvin get a chance at returning the kick. Harvin ran up and caught the rolling ball and weaved in and out of Broncos all the way to the end zone. 29-0 Seattle. Jevon Kearse added to Seattle’s lead when he caught a pass and broke three tackles and waltzed into the end zone for yet another Seahawk score. 36-0 was the score when Demaryius Thomas caught one of his eleven passes for a Denver touchdown. At the end of the third, the score was 36-8 Seattle.
Only one team scored in the fourth quarter. There was no miraculous Peyton Manning comeback. It wasn’t even the Broncos who scored. Doug Baldwin caught a pass from Russell Wilson and ducked his way into the end zone for a 43-8 Seattle lead.
The Seattle Seahawks were dominant in their victory over Denver. A highly talked about game with evenly matched teams turned into a blowout. With the youngest team on average to win a Super Bowl, look out for Seattle to repeat in the years to come.
