The JHS boys’ swim team is getting an early start this year. Senior swimmer Caleb Cole said, “I’m really hitting the weight room earlier than usual this year. I figured I gotta beef up since this is a big season for me. It’s senior year, and I gotta make it count.” Caleb, like many other swimmers, is hoping for a season to remember this year. With big meets like conference and sectionals at the end of the year, many members of the swim team are already looking ahead to the end of the season.
Captain’s practices have already started led by senior swimmers Chris Colburn and Ethan Toney. Toney made all-conference swimmer last year as a junior with Colburn making honorable-mention. Both senior swimmers are looking at their last year of high school swimming with their eyes on the prize. Colburn said, “Before we know it, we’ll be at conference already, and our hard work will finally have a chance to pay off. In individual sports like swimming, making state is very difficult, and senior year is pretty much the best shot we get, so we’re really going to push it this year to get the results we want.”
Another senior swimmer has been looking forward to this year since his first year in the race lanes. Matthew Freeman is hitting the preseason just as hard as his fellow senior Caleb. “We’re just really dedicated to the sport,” Freeman said, “It’s a huge part of my school year, and we’re going to do what it takes to see the goals we’ve set for ourselves. Some people may think that we’re hitting the preseason a little hard with all the extra lifting and the extra time we put in at the pool, but it will pay off in the end.”
