The JHS girls swim team has kicked the season very well according to senior swim captain Sophie Quigg. With a dual meet record of 2-1, the team continues to work hard toward their goal of “beating Chatham by conference or sectionals.” The seniors on this year’s swim team hold several of the swim team records including the 200 I.M. in 2:24.98, a record held by Sophie Quigg; the 500 freestyle in 5:53.68, a record held by Rachel Hall; the 100 backstroke in 1:06.48 also held by Sophie Quigg, and finally the 400 Freestyle Relay in 4:07 held by Maddy Albers, Savannah Leutz, Sophie Quigg; and Rachel Hall.
When asked about how this year’s team compared to the previous year’s team, Sophie said, “The team this year has the most potential I’ve seen in all four years.” With most of their records broken in their freshman year surely as seniors the team has nowhere to go but up. Unfortunately Maddy Albers has been unable to participate due to a shoulder injury. For the first time the girls have a dive team thanks to foreign exchange student Jenny Ostberg. The other senior captain, Rachel Hall, believes that Jenny may have a decent shot at winning conference this year. In recent history a JHS girl hasn’t won conference in diving. The girls seem to be excited at this new opportunity for the team.
If you’re interested in supporting our girls, the next three girls’ swim meets are all home meets on October 12, 15, 17. With the end of the season approaching fast, seniors like Rachel Hall are sad to see it go. “I’ve been swimming the last 12 years of my life. When you spend that much time doing something, it becomes a part of your life, not just something you do after school.”
