The boys track team is starting their season off with a bang. They recently had their first track meet on March 1 competing against about 15 different teams from the surrounding schools.
JHS did well for their first meet of the 2013 season. Senior team member, Aaron Vasquez, set a new personal record on the long jump at 19 feet and 8 inches.
Vasquez said, “I think our season’s going to get progressively better until we get to the point to where we feel satisfied with our performances.”
The team this year is made up of about 25 members competing in every event of the meets such as long jump, hurdles, and 4 by 100. No JHS tack member is competing in the pole vault event.
Last year JHS had five boys go to the state competition. Those members were Reggie Bratton, James Jackson, Dionte Armstrong, Ricki Nieves and Nick Schippel.
Bratton, Jackson, Nieves, and Schippel all won the 4 by 100 state championship title. Also, Bratton won the 100.
With big shoes to fill this year, the boys track team is very determined to make it to state again. Their season will end in May.
Their next meet will be this Saturday, March 16, at U of I in Champaign Urbana.
