Savannah Leutz from the girls’ high school swim team will be swimming in the state meet this Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17. The meet will be held in Evanston, IL which is about 20 miles north of Chicago. After no one thought a swimmer from Jacksonville could even come close to making state, Savannah beat the time for the 50 yard freestyle by almost half a second. In swimming, each millisecond counts, so even a half of a second is a substantial amount. Leutz will be the only swimmer from Jacksonville to have gone to state in the past 17 years.
“I imagine it will be the same as YMCA state but with harder competition,” said Leutz. She has been swimming since she was six years old. When Leutz was 12 years old, she was a part of a relay team that got 3rd in state. Leutz says she is excited and nervous about going to state. Leutz will practice every night this week with Coach Sam Black to prepare for the upcoming event. Congratulations to Savannah Leutz on her accomplishments.
