At the Jacksonville Invite on Tuesday, October 2nd, sophomore Emma Chelsvig broke the girl’s record for the Jacksonville Cross Country course.
She ran the three mile course in 17:51, breaking the previous course record.
“Over the summer I made it a goal to get over 300 miles in before the season,” said Emma. “I achieved it, and it has helped me to improve tremendously in my running because I’m in better shape. Throughout the season, I have kept focused on pushing myself so I can improve my cross country times even more and build on the miles I have put in.”
She also went on to take 1st place at the Central State 8 meet in Springfield on the 13th of October, finishing with a time of 18:53, a full eight seconds ahead of the runner behind her.
“I am really proud of Emma and the improvement she has made this year. She has worked really hard and it is paying off for her,” says Coach Van Bebber. “Emma came close to breaking the record at the JHS Invite on September 29th, and I think she was disappointed she didn’t get it. So, I think she was determined to break it during our triangular on October 2nd. She was very aggressive from the start of the race and left the rest of the runners before the first mile was over. I hope that breaking the record and winning the conference meet are just the beginning of what is to come for her during the rest of the season and the future.”
