On the 13th of October, JHS hosted its very first “Swim for a cure” meet at the Bob Freesen YMCA. The meet was a dual between two Jacksonville teams who have had a big rivalry for a long time. Although the meet was held to see who the better team was, it was also a fundraiser for breast cancer. Overall both teams raised $1,400, with JHS pulling in the majority with $1,350 and Routt supplying $50.
JHS’s Rachel Hall gave a short speech about how the fundraiser worked and how the money was raised. She also informed the crowd of some little-known statistics about the disease. JHS’s coach, Sam Black, and Routt’s coach, Dee Arndt, came up with the idea after hearing and attending the Volley for a Cure this year. The money raised went to the Mia Ware Foundation, a local organization started in 2004 after Mia Ware died from breast cancer. The two teams will continue this tradition in years to come.
