March 13 marked the beginning of a time of the year celebrated by some of the nation’s biggest basketball fans.
Fans gathered around the television on “Selection Sunday” to await their team’s fate in the March Madness tournament. Teams such as Syracuse, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Michigan State each received number one seeds from their region.
March Madness has always been known as a time that has allowed the underdog to shine on the biggest stage of college basketball. Highly ranked teams such as Missouri, Duke, and Michigan were each knocked out of the tournament, in the first round, by little known colleges ranked thirteen and higher.
Although there have been upsets, the four number one ranked teams still remain to play in the “Sweet Sixteen.” Sixteen teams, from all four regions, will be playing, Friday, for the chance to advance to the “Elite Eight” and then finally the “Final Four” in New Orleans for a shot as college basketball’s national champion.
