The Crimson has been a long-standing mascot at Jacksonville High School. A ninety-year old mascot.
In the year 1919, the school colors were red and white. A contest was held at the high school to choose a mascot. The Crimson Jackals were chosen. We were referred to as the Jacksonville Jaxs.
A Jackal is a small, wolf-like animal. It is not a ferocious by any means. A Jackal is not a very intimidating mascot.
In the mid-nineteen-twenties, the students of Jacksonville High Schooldecided to drop the jackal and just be called the Jacksonville Crimsons.
Over the years, many have suggested adding a mascot to the already existing Crimsons. Something like the Crimson Jaguars, Crimson Tigers, or the Crimson Jays. All have been turned down though.
Although most JHS students complain about the lack of a “true” mascot, the Crimson has become the school’s identity, and most students abound with Crimson Pride!
