Winter. It’s a time of year that most people look forward to with hate on their faces and fear in their hearts. But is that fair? Should people really look to this time of year with so much disdain? Yes. The answer is yes. Winter is awful. Just an absolutely terrible time of year. Every time I look to the sky in the winter and see clouds approaching’ I know that the end is nigh. But the end never comes because that’s what winter does. It circles us as a cat does a caged bird. Winter makes buildings collapse and water pipes break; it causes more sick days than any other season, and worst of all? Winter makes children fall on the ice. The ice may be the worst part. It slips and slides, and scientists don’t even know why. Plus it kills more people yearly than fires. People have been saying for years that winter is awful. So if you don’t trust me then take the words of Robert Frost. The great man once said:
“Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.”
Even Robert Frost would die in fire before he would in ice! Any time of year in which animals run, hide, and generally flee should have been abandoned centuries ago. You might say, how do you abandon an entire season? That’s a good question. We do what we have already begun to do. We shut down businesses, lock ourselves in our houses, drink hot cocoa, and pray. But I propose we take it a step further and abandon the outdoors entirely for the duration of winter. We should be stocking up on food and ignoring outside responsibilities entirely. So even though we are past the winter solstice and winter is coming to its close, I say we lock ourselves away and play Uno until this whole thing blows over.
