Equal marriage is a heavy topic in the United States today. It’s a controversial topic that is widely discussed and argued over. Both sides have a right to an argument, but is it really right to keep someone from marrying the love of their life just because someone feels uncomfortable with it? Love is love, right? So how does someone else’s marriage affect some bystander’s daily life?
Illinois recently passed the equal marriage law, where gay marriage is now legal. Now, same sex couples can be married legally and happy. As long as they are in love and happy, that shouldn’t be a big deal, but still discrimination takes place everywhere. Being accepted for who you are should be something everyone should have the right to. Being brought down for being happy isn’t fair.
Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions, but some should not be said out loud. Why bring someone down because your beliefs aren’t the same as theirs? Equality should be wide spread, and now congress is doing something to make it happen. People everywhere are getting the word out that equality is fair.
Some may argue about this new law because of words written in the Bible. “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” I was once told by a student, who argued with me over social media, that may be what’s written, but it’s not right or fair to say something like that to an individual. Everyone’s opinion should be respected, but if someone goes out of his or her way to disrespect another then that would be crossing the line.
Words can hurt somebody more than fists, and everybody was created equally. That being said, everyone has that right to be treated equally, also.
