Every November, National Homeless Awareness Month is observed so that we can make known just how many people are homeless and the things we can do to prevent these measures and help those who are struggling.
What does it mean to be homeless? Someone who is has nowhere to go and has no home to return to. Every year there is an average of 1.6 million who are just children out on the streets. The number of homeless people, referred to as “hobos,” increases every year. What does it mean to watch someone lying on the ground freezing and hungry and do nothing about it? That means that we are selfish and cruel; things to do are many, and people to help are few. We need everyone to help organize our communities and help get people off the streets.
Working together and putting in an effort to get our people off the streets and be an example to other communities is our mission! First step: putting a plan together and putting it in motion. The Jacksonville community held a “Homeless Night” on the square on Saturday, November 9th. They gathered people together and slept in boxes on the sidewalk. Ten people or so joined in on this activity to support helping out the homeless in our community.
We should keep gathering people together and laying out things to actually do. A community, yours or ours, can do something to keep children, teens, and adults off the streets and into a home with food and water. It’s such a tragedy to see people suffer, and I’m sure it’s hard to sit somewhere and see people watch you and not help you. Make it easier for everyone and give a little. Whether its support and encouragement or it’s full out love, everyone deserves to be loved. Reach out to make this Homeless Awareness month count!
