On February 2, Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter. Those six weeks are almost over and spring is on its way! The snow has finally melted, and the temperatures have been rising steadily. Spring fever has officially been diagnosed. The winter has been cold and never-ending, but we have survived and spring is here to stay. Everyone is ready to be able to be outside in the fresh air once again. Our clocks have sprung forward, and we are ready to finally be warm again!
This winter has been one of the coldest and harshest winters for our country. The city of Boston got six feet of snow in 30 days! Luckily, Jacksonville did not get that much although we did get more than our average snowfall. So far, JHS has had three snow or cold days that will be made up when the weather is warm and everyone just wants to be outside. If we don’t get any more snow days, the last day of school will be May 29.
Spring sports have begun, but the ground is so muddy that most are practicing indoors. Both boys’ baseball and girls’ soccer kick off their seasons this week with their first games. Boys’ tennis also begins practice this week. Girls’ softball and track and field have their first competitions on Saturday, March 21.
The seniors are especially excited about this spring as it signals their final semester of high school. Graduation is not so far away anymore, and everyone is busy making plans for next year. For many, it will be off to college next year. Others may be headed straight to work or the armed forces. But whatever their plans are for next year, seniors right now are just focused on enjoying their last quarter of high school and making plans for the summer. I think we can all agree that we are thankful for spring!
