If you don’t know already, October is the month to raise awareness for breast cancer. Many JHS students have family members who are affected or have been affected by breast cancer.
JHS’s own breast cancer survivor, Mrs. Dimmick, comments about her battle, “After the fifth year mark of not having breast cancer, a lot of weight was lifted from my shoulders. But the worry of it coming back will always be in the back of my mind.”
Fellow JHS students showed support by participating in the Volley for the Cure on October 1. There was an incentive to get people to donate $1.00. If your volleyball hit a certain prize you got to take that prize home.
Breast cancer does not discriminate against age or gender. Breast cancer has impacted the lives of many men and women throughout the world. There is nothing you can do to prevent it; it just happens.
Even if you are not personally affected by breast cancer, you can still support it. On October 20 at 9:00 am, there is a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Springfield, IL. It’s located at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. So far they have raised over $48,000.
Jacksonville has a local foundation in memory of Mia Ware. The Mia Ware Foundation focuses on educating, raising awareness and supporting those who have battled with or are battling breast cancer now. The foundation has many events to raise money and awareness for. People can volunteer for Relay for Life’s Survivor and Caregiver Dinner or other Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities. Wear pink anytime this month to support our fellow men and women. Boys, don’t think wearing pink will make you less “macho.” You can do it too!
