On October 6th, Jacksonville Rotary’s Oktoberfest took place at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, and was a bit colder than expected. With wool sweaters, large steins and warm tents, the atmosphere had the appeal of a Harry Potter set. German music and laughter filled the chilled air.
There were over 100 volunteers this year, bringing with them the activities that raised the money going to the community. They brought Bouncy Castles, texting competitions and event-oriented games. The money they raised allowed Rotary to hand out two $2000 scholarships which will go to students later.
Germany’s Oktoberfest is much different. It is a 16 day celebration with millions of guests and large beer-halls, but it started out much differently. Prince Ludwig, later crowned King Ludwig I, wanted to celebrate his marriage to Princess Theresa. On October 12, 1810, a horse race was held with about 40,000 guests.
The race was enjoyed and held again the next year at the same time as the State Agricultural show. The horse-race aspect died out over time, and the festival began to only be held every third year.
The beer and food feature of Oktoberfest only began in 1818. In truth, food and beer are probably the reason Oktoberfest has been around for 179 years.
Overall, our local festival is a great version of the beloved Bavarian attraction. More and more cities are developing their own Oktoberfests. Fall and beer is a universal attraction. Make sure you don’t miss Oktoberfest 2013 with its games, refreshments and competitions.
