Philip Wagener: The Modern Educator

Niki Patel, Staff Writer

In spite of being employed as a Psychology and Geography teacher at Jacksonville High School, the other side of Phil Wagener is the expertise he carries in computer technology. Mr. Philip Wagener attended at SIUE, where he got his Bachelor of Science Degree in History with a minor in Social Sciences. In addition, his teaching certification allows him to teach grades six through twelve. Impressively, he is also a nationally recognized PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator, Edmodo Certified Trainer and Support Ambassador, and Nearpod PioNear – hence, the reason why I perceive him as a computer genius.

Wagener’s hometown is Lake Forest, Illinois. His small and sweet family consists of his wife and son, Colton. During his free time, Wagener enjoys spending valuable time with his adorable son. He says, “It seems like yesterday when I was showing his newborn pictures and now he is almost 4.” It is amazing how fast time flies! Wagener’s love for his family is evident in the stories he shares of his wife and son with his students – stories that bring a mixture of happiness and tears.

An education class about teaching at SIUE as well as assisting a group of kids on their history project is what sparked Wagener’s interest in his field of study. According to him, “That feeling of making a difference is what affirmed his position as a teacher.” At JHS, Wagener loves the challenge of engaging students and preparing them for postsecondary success. His teaching style is a model for many teachers in this world. Wagener is a modern educator who establishes collaborative partnerships, with students and parents, to meet the needs and expectations of the modern student. He implements modern methods of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking so that students have the proper skillsets to succeed within a digital landscape.

JHS is fortunate to have a teacher who possesses the strengths of passion, perseverance, and pride that serve as a solid foundation for his professional character. Wagener successfully attempts to make his classes entertaining for students by welcoming them to a realm of open–mindedness. The principle he utilizes to motivate his students to become active learners is “This will not be a classroom of limitation, but rather of boundless opportunity.” The next time you come into contact with Wagener in the halls of JHS, remember that along with posing a question on the study of the mind and behavior, it is also acceptable to ask anything about technology related information because Mr. Philip Wagener knows it all!
