You know those people that you go to when you need a class changed? Or when you’re going through a rough time and just need someone to talk to? And you know how for the longest time they all used to be females? Well, all that has changed this year because we welcome the new guy in the student services office, Mr. Luttrell.
From Kincaid, Illinois, Luttrell grew up with one sister. His father worked in construction and his mother works at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. He attended Bradley University where he played baseball. He liked the campus and staff members when he went on a visit.
Going in with an undecided major, Luttrell ended up majoring in Psychology. He originally thought about going into physical therapy but changed his mind due to the amount of science he would have to partake in. His masters was in Human Development at UIS and was part time as a grad assistantship.
So why be a guidance counselor? Luttrell answered that it sort of came from a life experience he had as a college student. Like most students, he himself went through a period of time where he felt lost. He decided he wanted to help others who themselves felt lost during their lives.
Luttrell loves baseball. He played as a teen and continued on in college. His love for sports continued into a possible major but was then rejected by the amount of science that he would have to take in college.
His goal for this year is to adjust to the new school. He wishes to do so by settling in. Luttrell hopes to help the junior class through their struggles to deciding on colleges and future plans.
Luttrell’s favorite memory of a class in college was his psychology class where they go to dissect a brain. So next time you go into student services, ask him what it was like to see a brain. Or even start a conversation of how many states he has been to. (Hint: It’s seventeen!) Wish him all the luck in his first year here at Jacksonville High School.
