Last week, I took a music survey of Mrs. Symons’s sophomore English classes asking what kind of music they prefer, how often they listen to music, and other similar questions. The majority said they listened to music for two or three hours a day, and most of them enjoy pop or country music. I unintentionally forgot the country music category, which apparently offended some of the sophomores that were surveyed.
Despite the seemingly popular preference for pop music, most people said they don’t enjoy current radio music. Senior Kurtis Erickson said specifically that it “sucks,” and on many surveys it was described as “vulgar,” “repetitive” and “annoying.” One questionable student, when asked what he thought, said “It’s better than 80’s music.”
The survey also asked whom they would listen to if they could only listen to one artist for the rest of their lives. I got answers ranging from Katy Perry to Led Zeppelin. The most memorable ones were One Direction, Blink-182, and Michael Jackson.
This survey didn’t prove much, but it did prove that JHS sophomores have a very diverse taste in music.
