Goosebumps: Funny chills

Devon Huff, Staff Writer

Goosebumps is a famous book series known for its horror stories meant for children. There have been many books in the series, and now there is a movie. The movie Goosebumps stars Dylan Minnette as Zach, Odeya Rush as Hannah, and Jack Black as R.L. Stine, who is actually the author of the Goosebumps franchise. Jack also voices Slappy the Dummy, and the Invisible Boy. The movie is supposed to be a humorous and scary film to entertain the whole family because it is rated PG.

The movie starts out with the main character, Zach, and his mom moving to Madison, Delaware. His mom is the new Vice Principal for the school. While getting moved into his new home, his next door neighbor greets him through the fence. After learning her name is Hannah, her Dad appears and tells him to stay away from them. They meet again later and once again her Dad separates the two and gives Zach another warning. Later, Zach hears yelling at nighttime and thinks that Hannah might be suffering from domestic abuse. After failing to bust her father, he tries again. He sneaks in the home and sees a shelf full of Goosebumps books that all have locks on them. He unlocks it, and then Hannah comes in the room. After they sort out the whole misunderstanding, she asked him if he opened any of the books and he replies yes. He discovered why the books were locked; a monster from the story appeared out of the open book. Chaos proceeds to unfold as every monster in Goosebumps is unleashed into the world.

Goosebumps has been rated 6.4/10 on IMDb, 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 60% on Metacritic. In total, the movie has currently made 134.7 million dollars. In my opinion, I think the movie was boring. I liked the concept, but it was portrayed badly. The cast didn’t seem too great either; even though it included Jack Black, it did not really do anything for the movie. It felt liked the humor was forced and the parts that were supposed to be scary were predictable. I think the viewer would have more appreciation to the movie if they have read the books. I have only read one so maybe that’s why I did not care for it. I only recommend the movie to fans of Goosebumps.
