Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn, was published by Crown Publishing Group in June of 2012. It soon appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list. I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. This novel is a gripping story involving the disappearance of Amy Dunne on her fifth wedding anniversary. Immediately, the police become suspicious of her husband, Nick. This thriller follows Nick and Amy Dunne as the investigation continues. Is Nick really capable of killing his wife? All the evidence seems to think so. This plot was written with great detail and suspense, but some moments of this book were too graphic.
This novel grabs the attention of the reader. Although the characters are not very likeable, the reader finds themselves rooting for them. You desperately hope that they are innocent. I found myself intrigued by the characters and questioning their motives. Around every corner, there is always another surprise that you never saw coming. The plot is unexpected and the author keeps you guessing the entire time. This novel is the perfect combination of suspense, drama, and mystery. It is a very hard book to put down!
While the plot of the book is captivating, this book includes some scandalous scenes where I believe too much detail was used. These parts seemed unnecessary to me. This book was definitely written for a mature reader. Other times, I felt a bit squeamish about blood. If blood creeps you out, then I would be prepared to brace myself. I felt that the book would have been just as effective without these scenes. Despite these questionable moments, this book is worth reading and I recommend it.
This book was recently made into a movie which is in theaters now. It was number one in the box office on its opening weekend. Gillian Flynn also wrote the screenplay for this film.
