On February 7, Fox 2000 Pictures released an intriguing film grounded in historical events from the 1940’s. Based on Robert Edsel and Bret Witter’s 2009 book, the film version of Monuments Men is written, directed, and starring George Clooney along with A-list actors Matt Damon, Cate Blanchet, and Bill Murray.
In the midst of World War II, an unlikely platoon of seven members, carefully chosen for their skills and smarts, is asked by FDR to save artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves. This seems an impossible task as the artwork is being held hostage on enemy territory in Germany and is to be destroyed the moment Hitler demands it.
Thus begins an action filled adventure sprinkled with a touch of comedy. The monuments men risk it all to save over one thousand years’ worth of history’s greatest achievements. They are in a race against the clock to steal back the pieces before the enemy forces destroy cultural backgrounds that do not belong to them. The Monuments Men strongly believe, “You can wipeout an entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground, and somehow they’ll still find their way back. But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements, then this is it. They never exist again.” Hitler plans to wreck it all as a part of his master plan, but this dedicated team of seven is determined to stop the Nazis in their tracks. The Monuments Men refuse to allow the histories of multiple European countries to be held captive by Hitler and rescue as much as possible.
This film portrays the events of a true historical story. With an A-list cast and director, as well as a unique and untold story, Monuments Men is predicted to have much success at the box office.
