The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones came out in theaters August 21 this year. In the opening weekend, the movie collected $9,336,957. The book fans may be a little disappointed in it, but anyone who has not read the book will enjoy the movie. The characters are quick witted and the actors played by them do a good job.
Several things were changed in the film or not included that some Mortal Instruments fans would not have liked. It showed some of the chemistry between Clary and Jace, but parts of it just seemed cheesy. The plot followed well with the book, but the details that made fans fall for the book aren’t in the film or just weren’t right.
Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace) did an exceptional job showing the hard edges in Jace’s personality and the sweet hidden ones hidden as well. Lilly Collins (Clary) showed the strength and courage Clary had to have in order to find her mother and survive the first few days in a rough world that she was meant to be in. While Robert Sheehan (Simon) did an exceptional role as the boy in love with a girl who will never truly love him that way.
The film is supposed to make viewers like the characters and understand them, and in some scenes it did, but in others it didn’t feel real like Cassandra Clare made it seem in her writing. At moments it seemed unrealistic and cheesy, but other moments the movie enraptured the viewer and showed the emotions and actions just as Cassandra Clare wrote.
In my opinion, Mortal Instruments was not the best it could be, but it is good none the less. We will have to see how the second movie City of Ashes goes. It is a good movie to watch with friends, and the story will be one you will want to follow.
