The new movie Gravity recently hit theaters, and lucky for you, I was on the scene. Gravity inspires mixed feelings but in the long run, I’d say it crosses the finish line with a shiny silver medal. This movie has been praised as one of the most accurate space movies ever made, but that does not make up for its multiple and noticeable inconsistencies, as well as its fairly annoying protagonist.
Gravity has many things that make it very enriching such as its excellent filming and direction, its accurate portrayal of space, and George Clooney, but these things, as powerful as they may be (George Clooney), cannot fully excuse its faults. For instance in one scene the protagonist (not George Clooney) spends a full two minutes howling, and the amount of context I just gave you for that scene is about as much as is provided. The entire scene tears you out of the movie and back into your chair, leaving you wondering why Sandra “not George Clooney” Bullock has decided to so suddenly interrupt your movie. Aside from that, inconsistencies in space physics appear frequently. Now I will admit; it very well could be correct according to what would happen in space, and I simply don’t understand because I have never been to space, but the viewer should not have to pause the movie and ponder physics in the middle of finding out what happens to George Clooney. Ridiculousness and inconsistencies together make a worthy case for this movie being awful, until you get to the end. The ending pulls this movie back from the grave and shoves it into your brain for permanent residence. The ending is this movie’s redeeming quality, and that is an understatement. If this movie had a different ending it would be a complete and utter waste of time.
In conclusion, Gravity does not deserve the praise it has received, but if you can stick with it until the end, it will be worth the trouble. It is excellently filmed and directed. It has its moments in the story. Plus, you know…George Clooney.
