The first episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. recently aired. Comic fans have been waiting for this show since it was announced in July 2012. Was it worth the wait? The show takes place in the Marvel Universe, after the events of the movie The Avengers. It is even made by the same guy who made Avengers. Sounds cool, right? Unfortunately, that’s only on paper.
The show came off as confused about itself. It seemed like the show was based on only days of planning. It had very little base in the comic book world but considering that all the characters who weren’t created for the show were created for the Iron Man movies, but those things are far from all that is wrong with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In order to continue telling the show’s faults though, there must be spoilers. So spoilers. Quit reading if you don’t want spoilers. Again spoilers ahead. Everyone still here? Good. The show’s only redeeming quality is that it introduced a character with super powers in the first episode. Unfortunately no one has ever heard of him. The character’s name was even changed to Mike Peterson. He was supposed to be Elijah Bradley the hero “Patriot.” That may sound like conjecture but if you line up the two back stories they match up perfectly, and constant winks are given to “Patriot” fans. References to Patriot’s shield are among them. Sadly, this character is removed from the show by way of bullet to the head. Of course, the show hints that he is recovering in a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility somewhere, but he is not in the next episode; he isn’t even mentioned.
This show’s only chance was to become great in its own right by showing great feats and introducing powerful characters. Instead they have decided to coast off of Avengers’ fame and fortune and do little more than limp to the barn with an NCIS + X-Files remake. In short, I do not recommend this show: not to you, not to those around you, not even to those you hate most. Avoid this disappointment.
