Oz the Great and Powerful told the story of how Oz (James Franco) came to be the wizard. It started in black and white, as The Wizard of Oz from 1939 did, and turned to color after Oz got sucked into a tornado. I liked the fact that just like in The Wizard of Oz, this movie tied in characters from Oz’s actual life to the characters he meets in the Land of Oz. Being a selfish man, Oz is taught lessons throughout his journey to become the wizard that makes him a good man in the end. He meets Theodora (Mila Kunis) who is a good witch and leads him to the Emerald City to meet her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz). You also find out how the Wicked Witch of the West comes to be. Glinda (Michelle Williams) makes appearances throughout the movie.
Being a daughter of someone who is in love with The Wizard of Oz, I was very anxious to see the movie. I wasn’t really sure of the plot behind it before I went or if I would like it at all. The beginning of the movie threw me off, and I didn’t really make sense of it until Oz was sucked into the tornado. I really liked it in 3-D when I usually shy away from 3-D movies. The graphics and angles made me feel like I was actually there. They did a great job casting the roles and developing the characters throughout the movie. The plot was phenomenal and there was never a dull second. All in all, I loved the movie. It tied very well to the original, and I will definitely buy it when it is released on DVD.
