Want a movie that mixes zombies and love? Then Warm Bodies is definitely a movie you would enjoy. Based on the novel by Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies tells the story of a zombie, R, who thinks too much. This eventually leads him to fall for a human girl, Julie, who is with a group trying to kill zombies. These feelings get his heart beating and he begins to act more human.
Many are calling the movie “the story of Romeo and Juliet in a zombpocalyptic world.” The male lead’s name starts with an R and the female lead’s names are very similar. Instead of Romeo being of a lower class, he’s a zombie and his Juliet is a human. Another thing that triggered the similarities to Romeo and Juliet in my mind was the balcony scene where R came to talk to Julie.
There were a few elements of the movie which I did not like with other parts that I enjoyed tremendously. I was impatient with the time it took for him to be able to talk like a human. I felt like there were times before he could actually speak in full sentences that he would speak fluently then a few moments later he would be incapable to form these sentences.
I really liked that there were funny elements incorporated in the zombies’ lives, especially with R’s best friend, M. Another thing I believe they did well was showing the transition of R throughout the movie by slowly giving him a less pale complexion. Although it wasn’t completely obvious, it was just a little thing they incorporated to show how the blood was slowly starting to pump back into his veins.
All in all, I thought the movie was definitely a good mixture of the two completely different genres. I went to go see the movie on Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend who usually hates love stories yet loves zombie movies. Afterwards, he told me that he loved it and wished to see it again.
