At one time or another, the class of 2013 has been a victim of senioritis. It is a serious disease and not one to joke about. Underclassmen may think they have endured it too, but they have only gotten a taste of what is to come their senior year.
Senioritis is easy to catch and almost impossible to get rid of. Seniors think that once they get accepted into college that they can just start slacking off because their future is already set in stone. Little do they know, the symptoms of senioritis can cause them to lose their acceptance.
“To me, senioritis is whenever you are a senior and are excited to leave. Excited to be out of high school, you’re on top of the food chain and you can’t wait to exercise that right. You are ready for college, ready for new people, and tired of the old,” says senior Caleb Elmore.
Senior Natalie Flynn has a different opinion on what senioritis means. “I think senioritis is when seniors hit that point where they just don’t care anymore. We don’t want to do homework anymore, and we definitely don’t want to come to school. We’re just going through the motions until graduation.”
Urban Dictionary defines senioritis as: “A crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include: laziness, an over-excessive wearing of track pants, old athletic shirts, sweatpants, athletic shorts, and sweatshirts. Also features a lack of studying, repeated absences, and a generally dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon known as graduation.”
Instead of succumbing to this cruel disease, learn how to avoid it or rise above it. It’s not really that hard. Just find something to take your mind away from the intruding thoughts. If you are having trouble thinking of something to do then get involved with sports. Join some of the school clubs! Just simply have some fun but make it legal, of course.
Seniors: you may think that there is no hope and that it is way too hard to stay focused in school, and I’m right there with you, except doing schoolwork is far too important. This is the crucial hour. Just because some of you have gotten accepted doesn’t mean that acceptance can’t be taken away. Don’t let the laziness of today ruin your plans for tomorrow. It’s not worth it.
