The “smoker’s corner” is the name for where JHS students go to smoke cigarettes. Smoking is not encouraged by the school, but it’s not stopped because JHS doesn’t own that property. Therefore there’s nothing to do about smoker’s corner except warn everyone of the dangers of smoking.
For women: Women who smoke heavily show a 43 percent decline in fertility. Women smokers are three times more likely than nonsmokers to be infertile. It might not seem important in your teenage years, but when you decide to have kids, it will have lowered your chance of being able to.
For men: Studies on male smoking have shown a decrease in the quality of semen. Sperm concentration refers to the number of sperm found in a measured quantity of semen. Studies have shown a 23% decrease in sperm concentration in men who smoke. Sperm motility refers to the swimming capabilities of the sperm. If sperm cannot swim properly, they may have trouble reaching the egg and fertilizing it. In men who smoke, researchers found a 13% decrease in sperm motility. Sperm morphology refers to the shape of sperm. Oddly shaped sperm may not swim well enough to get to the egg and may not be able to fertilize an egg. Male smokers have fewer healthy shaped sperm than non-smokers.
For everyone: Each cigarette costs the smoker five to twenty minutes of life, and later in life that ends up to are days, months, or even years. If you smoke 12 cigarettes a day for a week, it will cost you $20.79. If you smoke 12 cigarettes a day for a month, its $90.00, and if you smoke 12 cigarettes a day for a year, its $1,084.50. That is a lot of money. Also from the moment smoke reaches your lungs, your heart is forced to work harder. Your pulse quickens, forcing your heart to beat an extra 10 to 25 times per minute, as many as 36,000 additional times per day. Smoking is a very dangerous habit to get into, and I encourage everyone not to smoke.
JHS staff doesn’t encourage smoking, but they prefer everyone to do it outside and not on school property. It’s not “cool” or smart; it’s really stupid. No, I am not calling smokers stupid; I’m just saying what they are doing is stupid. Make a good, healthy choice not only for you but for your future. There are so many opportunities in this life, so don’t kill yourself off now. Stop Smoking.
