I’m sure most of the class of 2013 is breathing a sigh of relief. We’re finally top dogs and so close to the finish line. They say high school goes by fast, and I know for sure that I didn’t believe them when they said that but these last few years have gone by so quickly that they’ve been a blur to me. As we walk down the hallways, we think to ourselves, “When did so much change?”
Being a senior means so much more than just being in our last year of high school. We start having to make major life decisions such as where we’re going to attend college or what profession we’re going into. Along with this, we still have our regular load of homework, jobs, and social lives to keep up with.
We’ve also watched each other grow in different ways, made new friends, and some have even grown apart. The friends we used to walk through the halls with become the strangers we walk past without even a simple “hello.” With others we have had our rough patches, but those only made us stronger.
Realizing we will be attending our last days here at JHS this year will be something some of us will celebrate, but others will mourn. There will be no more big cookies, proms, or sporting events to sit together in the student section.
With some of us graduating early, we also have to worry about saying goodbye to the peers we’ve become so close with over the years. We begin to watch each other go in separate ways and start new lives as adults.
Graduation will be a day filled with emotions. Whether you’re happy to finally be leaving or upset when realizing this will be our last time we’re all together, it will definitely be a bittersweet day.
Facing the real world will be tough to get used to: dealing with big job interviews, buying a house, and being completely independent. In some cases, we’ll be alone in a new place and realizing those friends we had by our sides all through school are no longer right next to us but across town or across the country.
With all of these in mind, we shouldn’t get too worked up. We’ll all see each other at class reunions!
