  • "The future belongs to those who prepare for it today." --Malcolm X
  • "Journalism allows its readers to witness history; fiction gives its readers an opportunity to live it." - John Hersey
  • "If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be."

Niamh Brannan, staff writer

Niamh Brannan is a 17-year-old trans woman attending Jacksonville High School for her last year, where soon she will be on her way to the University of Chicago. (No matter what it takes!) She has paved the way for queer individuals to feel welcome, understood, and accounted for at her school, and she hopes to leave a legacy of bold fashion, loud humor, and empathy in her path. She fears not taking up space, air, or words on a page, always exceeding the word limit on papers and poetry, always talking a little too long, and humming to her music a little too loud. You should hear her in the car or in the shower, belting notes to Adele, bopping her head to Amy Winehouse, or dancing around her room to SOPHIE. Niamh Brannan demands attention. And she has demanded it from her birth; all the nurses on the floor came to see the little girl born with bright red hair.  And she demands it now with her application to the University of Chicago, her journalistic aspirations, and even more with her giant dreams of the future.

For now you will see her as a hostess at Buffalo Wild Wings, laughing loud with her best coworker Abby, but soon she’ll be in magazines, articles and on the cover.
