1st Round East Region: Walkup, SFA stun West Virginia

SFA

First off, I would like to add that I had this upset predicted in my bracket.  The Lumberjacks busted my bracket in 2014 when they upset VCU and nearly put my bracket to shambles again last year when they came close to upsetting Utah.  This year I was taking no chances and picked SFA to knock off the Mountaineers of West Virginia.  Thank you, Thomas Walkup, for making me a very happy man.

Thomas Walkup, the senior forward, did it all for the winners of the Southland Conference.  He scored a game high 33 points for the Lumberjacks including an amazing 19-20 performance from the free-throw line.  His clutch shooting from the charity stripe iced the game down the stretch and never let West Virginia get in striking distance.  To go along with his scoring, he added 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and also recorded a block.  Clide Geffrard, Jr., the only other SFA player in double figures, dropped 14 points.  West Virginia couldn’t seem to find any offensive rhythm in this game.  They shot only a notch above 30 percent from the field and only an ugly 18 percent from beyond the three-point line.   Devin Williams and Esa Ahmad were the only two players who managed to reach double figures for the Mountaineers with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Stephen F. Austin will continue to ride Walkup as they move on to face Notre Dame for a chance at the program’s first ever trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
