The Ole Miss football team is off to one of the best starts to a season in the history of the program. They’re now 7-0 and ranked third in the nation. If the season were to end today, Ole Miss would be one of the four teams selected to play in the first ever college football playoff.
A large part of this success is directly related to the production of the Ole Miss defense. Opponents are averaging a mere 10.6 points a game. In seven total games, the defense has allowed seven touchdowns. The team has eight forced fumbles and has picked off 17 passes. To go along with these takeaways, the unit also has 18 sacks.
On the offensive side of the ball, senior quarterback Bo Wallace is off to a great start. Wallace has thrown for 1,899 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has also added 220 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. This dual-threat quarterback is a leading candidate for the Heisman trophy at this point in the season.
The 7-0 start has nothing to do with an easy schedule. Ole Miss has defeated Alabama, who was the third ranked team in the nation at the time, and went on the road and beat the then eleventh ranked Texas A&M Aggies. To add to these wins, the Rebels have dismantled two conference foes in Vanderbilt and Tennessee, winning 41-3 and 34-3 respectively.
A showdown is looming in the last week of the season when Ole Miss hosts undefeated Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.
